Seminar on red yew III

Podyjí National Park Administration
&
Forestry and Game Management Research Institute
organized a professional seminar on October 15-16, 2024 at Bítov Castle
RED YEW MANAGEMENT III
The event was supported by:
Regional Office of the South Moravian Region
Ministry of Agriculture

The goal of this year’s meeting in Bítov remained unchanged: to strengthen the emerging platform that facilitates mutual cooperation, the exchange of contacts, current information, and experiences among all individuals dedicated to this often-neglected tree species. The premature weakening of efforts by volunteers, professional nature conservationists, and foresters to support this species could jeopardize the promising progress that has been made in many areas within a relatively short period. Furthermore, this positive trend is not evident throughout the entire Czech Republic.

In this context, it is crucial to pay attention to the currently prepared amendment to the Act on Nature and Landscape Protection regarding special species protection. The amendment proposes that the yew should no longer be categorized as a specially protected species, which is safeguarded by legal prohibitions. Instead, it should fall under the regime of “active care for species” listed in the Red Lists, which should be directly linked to legislation.
