The paper analyzes the growth of silver fir saplings in the lower layer of selection forests. Two stands with different soil type were analyzed (rankers and cambisols). Understorey light conditions in stand with ranker soil were analyzed by hemispherical photographs. In each stand, there were 10 homogeneous plots with 30 saplings established (sapling height >130 cm, DBH <5 cm). The apical dominance ratio (ADR) value is a suitable indicator of light environment in lower layer of selection forests. Saplings with ADR value less than 1 were considered as light-stressed. Regarding the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), the value of 16% was determined as crucial threshold determining the crown shape of fir saplings. The reduced height increment was used for analysis of the influence of light conditions on the growth of fir saplings. The moderate correlation (r = 0.44, p = 0.0005) was confirmed between the reduced height increment (saplings height 100 cm) and % PPFD value. Height growth of saplings in analyzed stands started at the level of 8.47% of full sunlight. The best light conditions were determined at the level of 18.34% of full sunlight. Significant differences in reduced height increment of samples were confirmed on both soil types (p = 0.001). The research did not confirm the impact of different soil type on the apical dominance ratio (p = 0.80) neither on the average height increment during last three years (p = 0.14). From the light characteristics point of view, obtained results confirmed the silver fir as a suitable tree species for the selection forests, regardless the soil type.
