Abstract

The article deals with the growth reaction of Carpathian birch (Betula carpatica W. et K.) to different levels of calcium and nitrogen supply. Under more controllable conditions of the forest nursery this study attempted to concretize the factors connected with height growth retardation of Carpathian birch after liming that had been observed in the field experiment in the Jizerské hory Mts. Adding of nitrogen significantly promoted growth, however, it resulted in significantly increased mortality. The influence of the liming intensity on the growth intensity was only insignificant and inconclusive. It is possible to regard the Carpathian birch as the tree species suitable for the special afforestation, e.g. the afforestation of the mountain localities with severe climatic cnditions. But it is necessary to respect the obvious physiological differences of this tree species, which are different from another birch species and another common used tree species.
