Description of project

Main goal of the project is to quantify changes in water regime of three small catchments in the Jeseníky Mts. caused by deforestation as a consequence of bark beetle calamity. Further to identify risks in decreased water infiltration and retention, enhanced erosion, lowered ability to absorb torrential rain events and change in water quality – also as they are influenced by forest management during the calamity period. Finally to propose appropriate methods and good practice procedures to avoid this risk.

Project is divided into six working packages: i) maps of rainfall distribution within individual catchments; ii) maps of soil moisture and its potential change due to deforestation; iii) hydrological modelling; iv) monitoring of runoff chemistry; v) change in forest stands and forest management; vi) recommendation for forest management to minimize risk after partial deforestation of catchments.
