The Natural forest area Bohemian Forest was not heavily influenced by air pollution load in the past, in comparison with other areas within the territory of the Czech Republic. Nevertheless some indications on Norway spruce stands occurred commonly connected with the air pollution impact. A survey of Norway spruce conditions was conducted to detect, whether there are differences in comparison with forests in the rest of the Hercynian part of the country. Some heavily polluted areas of this Hercynian part are included. The surface soil layers in Bohemian Forest do not distinctly differ in soil reaction and the concentration of nutrients as well. The only exception is the calcium concentration that is substantially lower in the soils in this area. Significant differences could not been detected in the composition of Norway spruce needles. A comparison of the results between two surveys (1998 and 2001) demonstrated above all a decrease in concentration of calcium and phosphorus in the humus layer and in the top mineral soil, too. Concentration of magnesium in the Norway spruce needles was reduced. In the humus layer and in spruce needles some significant correlations between individual elements could not be detected, but it was not possible to find out an antagonism between the concentration of nitrogen and other nutrients in the needles.
