Soil properties of spruce (artificially established) and beech (nature-close) stands were evaluated in two regions of the Czech Republic – Jizerské Mts. and Český les (Upper Palatine Forest). The results showed that there are no big differences between soil characteristics of spruce and beech stands. Soils have low pH values, very low content of base nutrients (Ca, Mg, K) and therefore low base saturation of sorption complex. Concentration of available phosphorus is also low in both types of stands. On the other hand, nitrogen concentration in upper part of soil often exceeds optimal values, which can lead to nutrient imbalance. In beech stands, deficiency of base nutrients in whole soil profile is observed, while in spruce stands base nutrient concentration in deeper part of soil is usually more favourable, due to the shallower rooting system of spruce.
