Ground vegetation assessment results from the silver fir gene reserves in the Czech Republic are presented in this article. Their phytosociological characterisation based on phytosociological relevés has been worked out. The results document the actual variability of ecological habitat condition and floristic composition, in the silver fir gene reserves. Two main plant communities within the Querco-Fagetea class were distinguished: acidophilous fir-beech forests and herb-rich fir-beech forests. In conclusion, it can be stated that the acidophilous plant communities prevail in the Bohemian Massif, while the nutrient herb-rich fir-beech forests are more common in the Carpathian region. In terms of phenotypic quality and production, however, no substantial difference between fir stands on acidophilous and nutrient habitats has been recorded. The results show that fir natural regeneration takes place on acidophilous habitats much more successfully than on the nutrient habitats, where it is restricted by the dense and rich herb layer.
