Floodplain forests represent a valuable ecosystem with a high level of biodiversity, which is dependent on the natural dynamics of soil moisture. In the Czech Republic, this ecosystem has been under negative anthropogenic influences. It is a key to study the effect of the pumping of ground water long-term on the vitality of the surrounding floodplain forest ecosystem. This study aims to design a complex methodological approach to the analysis of the effects of ground water pumping on the vitality of floodplain forest ecosystem in the Litovelské Pomoraví protected landscape area (Moravia, Czech Republic). The designed methodological approach included the following methods: health assessment, dendrochronological analysis, leaf water potential measuring, sap flow measurement, measuring of stem water potential changes, gasometric determination of photosynthetic parameters. Most of these methods did not reveal any significant differences between the sites where the water had and had not been pumped. Although each one is based on a different principle, they seem to indicate that ground water pumping has no negative effect on the surrounding floodplain forest ecosystem.
