Within the framework of sustainable forestry supported by the PEFC and FSC certification systems felling and skidding operations are to be carried out by environment-friendly methods. There is no uniform method in the European Union for the quantification of damage to forest stands after logging operations. Individually existing control methods used at the present time are based on different methodologies. The damage to forest stands can be reduced by a properly used highly mechanized technology. The upper limit of damage to standing trees achievable is 6% of trees at maximum. The upper limit of damage to soil can be derived from the root system growth space of Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) and is represented by a rut depth of 10 cm.
