The paper analyses a regeneration of birch by seeding within the windthrow area. The experiment was established under natural conditions of the fertile site of middle elevations, the Drahanská vrchovina Highland, Czech Republic. The original mature coniferous stand dominated by spruce was blown down in 2010. The experimental plot was established to compare different methods of forest regeneration. Two permanent plots (PRP 3 – 900 m2 and PRP 6 – 625 m2) were sown both in the autumn 2010 and in the spring 2011. Sowing rate was 1g.m-2 in both seasons. The germination capacity of birch seeds differed in particular sowing periods; in the autumn it reached 10%, while in the spring it was only 6%. The mean densities of seedlings found in the spring of 2011 were 14 per m2 on PRP 3 and less than 1 per m2, on PRP 6. The whole-area inventory of the PRP 3 conducted in the autumn of 2012 showed 22,000 birch seedlings higher than 50 cm per hectare. The average height of two-year-old sample birch seedlings was 122 cm and the diameter of root collar was 11 mm.
