Results are presented of an evaluation of vegetative and generative plantings of Norway spruce in the Ore Mountains (Czech Republic). Vegetative plantings were established using vegetatively propagated resistant variants of Ore Mountains N. spruce, with generative plantings used as a means of comparison. Plantings consisted of ca 200 individuals of each variant, located at Forest Administrations Litvínov, Klášterec and Kraslice. Assessments of quantitative (height, diameter at 0.5 m, DBH) and qualitative traits (stem form, vitality, Sacchiphantes occurrence, number of terminals) were made of three vegetative and three generative N. spruce plantings between 2009 and 2011. The age at assessment ranged from 11–14 years. Typological and phytosociological classification was carried out on all monitored areas. The median height of individuals of vegetative origin ranged from 137–266 cm, while the median height of individuals of generative origin ranged from 150–284 cm. While median diameters ranged from 1.0–3.5 cm for vegetative variants, median diameters for generative variants ranged from 1.0–4.0 cm. Similar results were observed for qualitative and quantitative characteristics across variants. These findings confirm that it is suitable to use N. spruce vegetative reproduction for the Ore Mountains N. spruce management in the area of this region, assuming methods of vegetative reproduction and planting are consistent with those used in this study.
