This article presents the results of the verification of methodology for determination of soil water retention curves (further SWRC) using ISO 11274:1998 Soil quality – Determination of the water retention characteristics – Laboratory methods within Soil Physical Ring Test (FSCC 1st Soil Physical Ring Test 2009) in order to supplement the monitoring of forest soils by hydrophysical characteristics in the project LIFE+FutMon. The retention curves of a representative database of selected forest soils were made for ten sites in the country. The investigated forest soils showed stoniness and high shrinkage, so the evaluation of retention curves extended to explore the influence of the mentioned properties in the results. If the sample volume increases the saturation, the volumetric moisture content for the original volume is much higher than the rate of saturation. As the true volume of common agricultural and forest pedon may be determined by the volume at full saturation of the sample, like that in organosols (Histosols). A newly established original equation was used for evaluation of data at high suction pressures in order to convert the volume of moved shrunken soil into smaller ring (cylindric) cores.
