Seed orchards are production populations, where the goal is to provide mass quantities of genetically superior seed. First generation seed orchards are established from initial plus tree phenotypic selections, therefore, information on respective genetic quality is mising in this initial phase of tree improvement. Progeny trials are the main tool to provide such information in the management of seed orchards. Based on the trails´evaluation, it is possible to estimate selection indices of individual parental trees in seed orchards, as well as that of individual progenies in progeny trials. Forward selection among these progenies then leads to the establishment of production populations in advanced generations.
