Process of snow accumulation and its thawing was evaluated in winter seasons 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 on research plot Lesni bouda situated in the Krkonoše Mts. (altitude 1080 m a. s. l.). The snow height, its density and water reserve in snow were evaluated in young stands of dwarf pine, Norway spruce, birch, larch and control free plot. Stands characteristics differed in evaluated winter seasons according to weather development. Accumulation of snow height and its density occurred in the second half of March in both winter seasons. The highest snow water equivalents were found in stands formed by spruce and dwarf pine, control plot had the lowest snow height and water equivalent. Snow heights in dwarf pine stand and near spruce stems were positively affected by branches. Water equivalent in thawing period depended on snow height and stand character. The rapid decrease of water equivalent was on control plot, the lowest decrease was in spruce stand. Shading of denser crowns reduced snow thawing in spruce stand. Mixture of species can positively affect process of snow thawing and spring water runoff from catchments.
