Development of methods for protection of spruce stands to mechanically acting abiotic agents, especially to storms, is characterized. Review of the previous research results in this field, notably related to stand tending and its effects to static stability, is given. The paper pays attention to the procedure of the international tending experiment within the IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) scheme since 1967, specifically focused on the Biely Váh research site founded in the year 1973. This site was used also to test influence of spruce stand tending, based on target tree method, on static stability (resistance to mechanically acting abiotic agents, i.e. wind, snow and rime). The paper gives results of this long-term experiment. We evaluated degrees of static stability in the stands with contrasting intensity of thinning. For this purpose, graphics of static stability using either slenderness ratio or ratio between crown length and tree height as dependent variable (regarding or regardless to site class as a factor) were used. Finally, practical recommendations for strengthening static stability of spruce stands are given.
