The article describes the proposal of main logging road use in mountainous areas for cycling. The study area was situated in the central part of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, Czech Republic. This paper aims to design an optimal combination of basic characteristics for cycle routes and for physically more demanding sport and recreational cycling. The surface type, state of surface damage and longitudinal slope were assessed. On the basis of the analysis it was found that the main logging road network is suitable for using and marking mountain cycle routes in the area. However, the current marking is inaccurate. Asphalt is the best surface for the design of cycle routes. There are 235.45 km of suitable roads with this surface type in total (45.98% of the main logging roads). For sports and recreational routes there are 416.50 km suitable (81.33% of the main logging roads). Dependence of the surface road quality and passability on the road surface type was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The article evaluates the suitability of forest roads infrastructure for cycling routes and encourages to more detailed classification, deeper analysis and better coordination with forestry management.
