Individual plastic tree shelters which are used to protect plantations from game browsing are not a completely verified technique yet, therefore investigation of their efficiency is needed. Our study focuses on changes of slenderness ratio of young beech trees (growing on mesotrophic beech-fir ecosite) at time they overgrow the upper rim of shelters. Results showed that initial significantly higher h/d ratio of beeches from the plastic shelters decreased over last 7 years; in 2010 they showed similar value compared to the beeches without shelters (situated inside the game-proof enclosure). Mean annual increments of stem base diameter of beeches in the shelters was also comparable with that of beeches without shelters. This, however, does not hold true where the shelters were elevated by 50 cm to prolong sheltering effect on trees; the shelters were elevated in the 4th year after planting. The elevated shelters affected both diameter and height increment negatively, though slenderness ratio also decreased.
