Genetic differences between two Norway spruce (Picea abies) tree sets (subpopulations) in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše in Czech) National Park, the Sněžka Mt. region, differing markedly in extent of damage after the Kyrill hurricane (2007), were investigated by using isozyme analysis for 110 standing and 110 laying (wind damaged) trees. Biometric measurements including preliminary tree-ring analysis were also accomplished. Using one-dimensional horizontal electrophoresis on the starch gel, G-6-PHD, GDH, SDH-A, PGM-A, MDH-B, MDH-C, LAP-B, IDH-A, IDH-B, AAT-A, AAT-B and AAT-C isozyme loci were studied. The highest genetic diversity was found for AAT-C and LAP-B loci, the lowest one for the IDH-A and AAT-B ones for both spruce subpopulations. For the remaining loci G-6PDH, GDH, SDH-A, PGM-A, IDH-B, MDH-B and MDH-C significant differences were found between both Norway spruce sets. Slight genetic differentiation between lower and upper part of the standing trees subpopulation was found. Genetic distances of investigated spruce sets in framework of overall six spruce stands and populations were calculated.
