Abstrakt

Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna L.) is an introduced tree species in the Czech Republic. Very little information is available on wood quality of that species in our country currently. The aim of this study was to analyse shrinkage of Turkish hazel wood and its within-stem variation. An impact of wood density on shrinkage value was also assessed. The used sample trees came entirely from the Czech Republic area. Shrinkage in tangential and radial direction and volumetric shrinkage were examined following the Czech national standards. Mean values for tangential shrinkage, radial shrinkage and volumetric shrinkage were 8.4 %, 4.7 % and 13.2 % respectively. Compared to native areas, obtained results differ only slightly. Our results also indicate that shrinkage of Turkish hazel wood is bigger in upper parts of the stem. No explicit trend was found for horizontal variability in shrinkage. Shrinkage of Turkish hazel wood correlated with the wood density very little.
