The bank stabilization has received much attention lately. Bank damage caused by reduction has appeared in nearly all world reservoirs. However, bank stabilization is mostly seen as a solution and implemented only when bank damage occurs. In this case, there is a unified scheme used, which means that a stone bank-toe is constructed and the (eroded) bank sloping is restored in place of the erosion wall. The article aims to introduce the possibility of active stabilization, and presents an alternative solution that lies in the use of breakwaters. Methods and results are presented on the example of the Brno reservoir (Czech Republic), however the process of abrasion has been monitored in a number of another water reservoirs, e.g. Liptovská Mara, Vranov, Bílovec (ÚRADNÍČEK, ŠLEZINGR, 2007). The Brno reservoir was chosen as a demonstration object, because in the Czech Republic it is one of the most affected by abrasion. Moreover, shoreline retreat can be monitored very well and constantly there.
