The paper documents soil forming effects of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) and dawn redwood (Metasequioa glyptostroboides Hu & Cheng) on the rich fluvial site of the School Training Forest in Kostelec nad Černými lesy (Central Bohemia). In these conditions – 250 m a.s.l., average year temperature 8ºC, average year precipitation 600 mm, soil type fluvisol – the surface humus accumulation was studied as well as the basic soil chemical characteristics: pH, soil adsorption complex characteristics, exchangeable acidity, oxidable carbon (humus) and total nitrogen content, content of plant available nutrients. The age of stands is between 42 – 48 years. The surface humus layers and uppermost mineral soil were sampled in the 4 replications and compared. Results confirmed relatively favourable effects of the dawn redwood on the surface soil layers (soil reaction, soil adsorption complex characteristics, nutrient content), whereas relatively degrading effects of the white pine.
