The influence of auxiliary species on qualitative parameters of the oak stands (Quercus petraea Matusch) was investigated. The investigation was conducted near Rožďalovice village, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Prague, Czech Republic. Experimental plots were established in flat terrain with an altitude ranging between 200–280 meters above sea level. Evaluation of qualitative parameters was performed in a mature oak stand (100–150 years) in three treatments: (i) oak stand without woody undergrowth, (ii) oak forests with undergrowth dominated by small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata Mill.), and (iii) oak forests with undergrowth dominated by European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.). There were four replications for each of these treatments. Site and environmental conditions of the treatments were roughly the same. Quality of oak stems was evaluated on the basis of stem curvature, height on the stem where the first thicker branch (more than 2 cm) occurred, and on the number and thickness of lateral branches. In addition to the qualitative characteristics the basic biometric characteristics were evaluated – i.e. height of the main stand and the mean diameter. The positive effect of auxiliary species on the oak quality was proved as auxiliary hornbeam was recognized as better species comparing to linden. Quantitative parameters of the oak stands were not significantly affected due to effects of auxiliary species. The positive effect of auxiliary trees on qualitative parameters of oak stands was confirmed.
