The oak (Quercus robur L. and Quercus petraea MATTYSCHKA, LIEBL) stands occupy about 6.7% of the forests area of the Czech Republic. The oak is one of the most important broad-leaved species in Czech forests. Main goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of two different thinning regimes – Thinning from above with positive selection and thinning from below with negative selection on development of oak thicket. Experiment was founded in 1994 in 11-year-old stand originated from natural regeneration. Parent stand was originally pine and oak mixture. The stand lies at an elevation of 470 m above sea level, acidic sites in oak with Beech Vegetation Zone (Fageto-Quercetum acidophilum – Luzula luziloides). On the basis of data from the period of 1994 – 2008 we found positive effect of high thinning on vitality of smaller trees at the age of 25 years, 14 years after the first tending felling. Thinning in young oak stand resulted in higher diameter of target trees and significantly lower quotient of slenderness. The quotient of slenderness of target trees was lowest on High thinning variant.
